As a number of you know, I moved back to NZ recently from the UK due to my rapidly deteriorating financial situation and problems gaining a new Visa. Heres a thread about the trip back.
It started by me waiting in the middle of the night at my old flat in London, I had all my possessions that I was taking back to NZ packed and a number of other items in storage not far from the property. I really nervous and really not sure how this was going to pan out.
Taxi came and with a mask on we went to Heathrow. It was weird seeing London for one last time (For now) during the night. We got to Heathrow early as I didn't want anything to go wrong.
I waited, Waited for ages, No sign of the flight staff. I was wondering what the hell was happening. Then they turned up. We spent ages on the phone when I was checking in with the Australian embassy before they let me through, Finally I got through into Heathrow.
Heathrow was empty, All the shops closed except for for the Boots, I got a drink and a chocolate bar and waited, Only one other flight I could identify and it was a Germany govt flight to Frankfurt. A far cry from the Heathrow I had know in the past. Then we boarded.
Flight was uncomfortable wearing masks to Doha. Flight attendants were in full hazmat suits. People in front of me were heading to Malaysia and had been trying for ages to get home after living in Amsterdam.
We landed at Doha, Things were surprisingly quick through Customs. Doha is an amazing airport, Pity most it was shut (Still more open than Heathrow). I walked around for hours wondering what to do and had a Burger King which felt like heaven after that flight.
A number of hours later a rather Banana staved Anna hopped on the flight to Sydney, Australia. Flight was rather similar to the last one. Watched a comedy about an Australian lady who had to move back to Australia from London after unforeseen circumstances, It hit close to home.
We landed at Sydney. We got told to stay in our seats that a government official will be boarding the plane. The government offical handed out leaflets saying we are being quarantined in a hotel in Sydney for 14 days. Rather confusing given I had an outward flight to NZ.
Hopped off the flight and lined up to be checked by a nurse "Welcome home!" She gave me details about what to do as a New Zealander and I walked through the normal customs procedures to a Military escort outside.
Military took me across the road to the Rydges hotel at the Airport. I keep hearing a do not take pictures of government officials blared at me. Got interviewed by a police officer then shown to my room.
In the morning, I went back down to where I was interviewed by the cop. Customs agents helped me a number of others through the procedures. Sydney Airport was a lot like the two other airports, Dead. Boarded the flight to NZ. Which was a BAU flight from Sydney to Auckland.
Landed in Auckland. Finally its over I'm home! Went through everything, Ministry of Heath officials tested me and questioned me, Once I had my bags they put me on a bus to my isolation hotel.

Hope this thread was informative about what traveling during the pandemic is like.
