The government denied the motion to extend free school meals to help the most vulnerable children over the holidays. Their argument is the following:

1. It’s the job of parent to provide.
2. Support must be given through universal credit.

Here’s why this is an issue.
Anyone who knows anything is starkly aware of the impact the coronavirus has had on jobs and income.
Thousands of people have lost their jobs and livelihoods. Providing for their family is quite obviously going to become much more difficult.
Universal Credit is available to people who are in work and on a low income, as well as to those who are out of work.

Since the outbreak of COVID19 in the UK, there has been a ‘tenfold’ increase in claims, resulting in 1.8 million people registering for universal credit.
High demand = low administrative efficiency and less overall help available to those that really need assistance.

Anyone who has ever dealt with a local government/council process knows how despicably woeful it is. Many aren’t receiving the help they need in good timing.
MEANWHILE. The government has since paid 10 BILLION to private companies such as Serco to run “test and trace” services.

Which were scandalously inept, to say the least.
Eat Out to Help Out scheme? It cost the government a cool 522 million to subsidize.
If you deny the motion of providing free school meals to low income students based on the faith in Universal Credit, I expect money, resources and reform of this machinery WITH HASTE.
Brendan Clarke-Smith (Conservative MP) said he did not believe in 'nationalising children'.
He told the Commons: 'Where is the slick PR campaign encouraging absent parents to take some responsibility for their children?’

The absent parents are working, Brendan.

Working.
Parents are the primary providers for their children.

But it is absolutely the government’s responsibility to ensure its citizens have enough resources and tools to stay above the poverty line.
The ‘absent parent’ trope diminishes the very harsh reality for working-class and low income families who are literally fighting to make ends meet in the midst of a PANDEMIC and a classicist, tone-deaf government administration.
Now if you’re going to deny the motion, then we will await the practical alternatives to deal with the 1 million+ kids that will go hungry this Christmas.

Oh right. There aren’t any.
