so like it& #39;s international stuttering awareness day and I& #39;m sure some of y& #39;all know I have a stutter but don& #39;t know much about it so uh here& #39;s an info thread :3
What is stuttering?
Stuttering is a speech disorder caterogized by uncontrollable repetition of sounds/words or blocks with sounds/words. The stutterer knows what they want to say but are often physically incapable of getting the words out.
What& #39;s the difference between stuttering and stammering?
Nothing! They mean the exact same thing, it& #39;s a matter of personal preference. Stutter is more often used in american english while stammer is more british english but they& #39;re 100% interchangeable.
How is a stutter caused?
There& #39;s multiple reasons for a person to stutter. People who suffer from neurological conditions, a brain injury, or stroke can stutter, or neurodivergent People can also stutter. Its also a possible for anybody to not have a cause :)
Do I have a stutter?
You probably don& #39;t as only 1% of the population stutters. Everyone experiences dysfluency and stumbles over their words, but only people who do it almost constantly have a stutter.
How can I support my friend with a stutter?
Ask them!! Everyone has their own personal preferences and how they want to be treated. But some common things are also:
DONT FINISH OUR SENTENCES (unless asked)
we already know what we want to say, and if you attempt to finish our sentence it puts on more pressure for us and can get frustrated when you keep getting it wrong
BE PATIENT
please don& #39;t talk over us or rush us as we get more stressed and it& #39;ll take more time to eventually get the sentence out
LET US SPEAK
we often have a hard time getting our words in during a conversation, and while it can be easy to miss, if you notice your friend trying to say something, stop what you& #39;re saying and listen :)
I have a stutter, how can I fix it?
Stutters are weird as they& #39;re different for everyone. Some people& #39;s just go away as they age, some people become more fluent through regular speech therapy and some people go on dedicated stutter courses (like myself!)
