Here's a thread attempt to explain why French patience is really up this time, and the rhetoric & govt response to Samuel Paty feels different - even than Charlie & the Bataclan - aside from the fact that a schoolteacher was decapitated in broad daylight for blasphemy
The "Islamist Separatism" that Macron talks about challenges cohesion & undermines the laws & values of the republic, but that's not the whole story. France has come to view the homegrown jihadi terror it has endured as an epiphenomenon of the "non-violent" Islamist threat.
This is the ideology & activities of the "Freros-Salafistes" - a French term for the Muslim Brotherhood and activist Salafists. Macron sees they create the fertile conditions for jihadi radicalisation, peddling grievance & often the same ideological endgame as ISIS/ al-Qaeda.
But that's not all-with the Paty murder, one of Macron's real fears about these Islamist ecosystems came true. There's concern that these "non-violent" Islamist milieus are closer to the adoption of violence than we think. The Islamist agitation against Paty confirmed those fears
Islamist nonviolence is strategic, not a philosophical renunciation of violence. Nonviolence is pursued during a phase of weakness, but in a phase of strength, or if they perceive themselves under attack/threat (including blasphemy), the conditions for adopting violence are met
If Islamist milieus develop to the point of a phase of strength, France has a more serious internal security threat on its hands than even subterranean jihadi networks. Until last week this was a theory, but Paty's murder shows some of these milieus are right on the line already
Hence, Macron's govt wants to shut down the millions of Euros flowing in from overseas to Islamist projects, and he wants to "decapitate the Islamist groups" (as he has allegedly said in private) in order to prevent these ecosystems from developing and entrenching even further.
The only problem for France is, that patience may well be up right now, but it will take years for Macron’s measures to take any effect - if indeed they are effective. Things may get a lot worse before they get better.
