Two years ago this February, a close friend of mine killed his mother. Unable to afford the medication to manage his schizophrenia, he suffered a break that led to a violent outburst during his senior year of high school. 1/6
As a single mother who worked multiple jobs, with an autistic daughter to take care of, no matter how hard she worked, the money wasn’t always there to cover the costs of his medication, unbeknownst to most of us. 2/6
While the act of violence itself haunts me and my community to this day, I could never fully blame him for what happened. All I could blame is a failed system. A single mother working multiple jobs to make ends meet, and health insurance that didn’t cover their needs. 3/6
