Di Safarti on Nine to noon yesterday syaing that the reason more Maori bowel cancer diagnosed under age fo 60 was because we dont live as long. In her mind this justifies not correcting the current inequity in opportunity to benefit from bowel screening... 1/?
where approx 22% Maori bowel cancer daingosed before age 60 cf approx 11% European bowel cancer. To be clear, this means that fewer Maori with bowel cancer have the opportunity to have it diagnosed through screening 2/?
and the bowel screening programme will improve European mortality more than Maori mortality ie the inequity will increase. No amount of talking about the theoretical effects of lower life expectancy on how bowel cancer is distributed across age groups change this.
