haven’t seen the trailer but it’s kinda funny to me that urbanized areas and western countries exoticize SEA textiles to the point of sometimes reducing entire ethnolinguistic groups to their products alone and that’s the exact thing they get wrong or underrepresent https://twitter.com/lesmisquerade/status/1318917839709896704
while we’re at it i’m gonna get mad at dom martin gomez, a designer-monk who had ethnolinguistic groups in the PH weave textiles to use as priestly vestments. he literally made younger members of groups disregard their rules of weaving to make colors and designs they wouldn’t do
apparently he dressed imelda marcos back in the 70s and this makes so much more sense
honestly tho where’s the actual cultural rep in raya? they’re just ppl with diff. skin colors and features. that’s not a culture. culture is manmade; it is socially created—that’s the literal social sci definition of culture. the created items in those 4 photos aren’t even right
tired of westerners + fellow urban dwellers being so fascinated w others’ cultures to the point of obscuring the reality of ethnolinguistic life. bro the reason u treat them as exotic is bc 1) they’re different from u and 2) colonizers literally tried to erase them from existence
that meme is supposed to be me anw im ending this thread bc i have to work jsjdjdka
