People have asked why I think my nephew is going to love this book when the MC is a girl.
For starters the messaging, “Be Brave! Be Quick! Be Independent! And Fun! And whether you’re a Pirate or not, the important thing is to BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!”

My nephew has struggled with “fitting in” - he’s shy, smart, and mostly socialized with adults during his first few years of life. So, “Be Brave! Be independent! Believe in yourself!” Are things we’ve encouraged a lot. He understands what it means to not fit in.
Also, he loves pirates and he loves his pops (grandad) and their adventures.
Lastly, reading stories from diff POVs enables kids to put themselves in other peoples shoes. He gets the chance to see that regardless of gender, other kids have experienced the same things he has. He’ll (hopefully) remember that the next time he’s on the playground.
Kids are smarter, more aware, and more resilient than we give them credit for. There is no harm in teaching them early that being different is okay, to be kind even when others aren’t, and that thinking outside of the box is a trait to be admired.
