Now that half the school supports prison abolition I am forced to find something else to yell about. I have chosen
1) Prepare to become ungovernable in the case of a coup - start now
2) Abolition of state violence implies abolition of the state as we know it
Regarding 2: Not abolition of museums or libraries or schools or other community institutions, just of the state.
Today, one of my professors in my constitutional theory class agued that the North should have appeased the South and that Lincoln was wrong to go to war (because 750k soldiers died. For reference 4 million people were enslaved). He was supported by every other professor
(It's a weird four professor class). Anyway, one of the virtues of being used to being a bit of a crank is that I was very comfortable spending an hour of classtime literally yelling at these people.
I have a lot of social anxiety in my regular life. I know taking up classtime is ~obnoxious~. I don't really struggle with fear of professors though I know many others do. But it's important to build crank muscles as often as possible. A lot of the class would have let this slide
Honestly it's also very validating because people do send me thank you text messages after I derail classes in this way. It's not like I'm the only person with strong values.
I refuse to let an entire class on 'crime' go by without acknowledging that prison, the punishment for crimes, is torture. Doctrines make more sense if you consider restoration anyway - like the idea of 'felony murder'. It's more intellectually engaged to not avert your eyes.
And honestly, I shouldn't be using the phrase 'derail class' either. It is dishonest, intellectually lazy, and morally bankrupt to abstract away the horrors of reality in any discussion of law. The doctrines are important to learn but the context enhances understanding.
End of thread, which I mostly wrote to deal with the stress of engaging in socially frowned upon behaviors. If you made it this far you are now morally obligated to yell about impact and values in class and in your future dealings, I don't make the rules sorry.
