the thing that i love about Darkwing Duck is how absolutely flawed he is -- i think I've done a thread on this before, but one of the best things the Disney Afternoon Animation cartoons did was ensure all their leads had extremely flawed traits

i like that, though age is clearly a construct in this world, Goslyn is still slightly older than Dewey somehow

much like how i am convinced that Batman cannot exist without the batfamily, Darkwing Duck cannot exist without Gosalyn. It's a matter of empathetic foil: if these vigilante characters are not shown with people they care about and will do anything for, why will they save others?

(I've paused again to think abt this & also because DW is saving Gosalyn) it's the reason why Sherlock HAS to care for Watson -- otherwise there is no emotional logic to Sherlock solving cases. If we do not see him care in the micro, we cannot understand him caring for the macro

"Doing good" is fine for a while but it won't hold up when things get hard. Even "doing good for the likes", which is DW's MO. But when push comes to shove, you need the WELL BUILT OUT emotional foils to convince the audience that, yes, they WILL save the world at all cost

(not to like, be predictable BUT I did say I would talk about SPN more) Sam and Dean are a PERFECT EXAMPLE OF EMOTIONAL FOILS. Both are well built characters, establishing early that they will do LITERALLY ANYTHING to stop the other from dying. IE, save the world a billion times.
