Dr. Kapoor suggests finding innovative ways to reach out for help in a discreet way. One such way is the use of “code words” when communicating with friends.

“Give them a hint that you aren’t safe at home. Suggest doing a Facetime with a friend so kids can play with each other virtually, & you can share non-verbal codes to say you are in need of help during this call.”

She also suggests making use of the chat options in apps to communicate a signal for help non-verbally, as well as asking for help from essential service workers, such as the food delivery person.
