Semishira Soulmate AU — short thread.

1.
Shirabu has been waiting for this moment where he meets his soulmate—his young little heart has been impatiently waiting ever since he was told what a soulmate was...
2.
It was a teacher in one of his classes. He remembers how everyone was just as entranced on the topic as he was.

“A soulmate... is someone who lights up your whole world. Someone who fills you up with happiness... Someone who makes you feel like home no matter where you are.”
3.
Oh how Shirabu wanted that. A home. He wanted that, craved for the grounding security. He's never felt that in the house he lived in... His "parents" may as well have been non-existent. He wanted *home*, he wanted to feel like he belonged, feel like he was meant to be here...
4.
So when Shirabu met Semi for the first time he couldn't help the way his eyes went wide or the way his heart stuttered or the way his breath was caught in his throat. The strings in his heart were being pulled like the red string on his finger.
5.
And as they stood face to face, the slight pull felt like a rough tug. He almost wanted to bring his hand up to Semi's... Shirabu felt as though maybe time really had stopped. His breath caught on his tongue. That sparkling heart emoji felt prominent in his chest now.
6.
But nothing would break his heart more than the words that came from Semi then.

“I'm not interested in soulmates. I'm only here for volleyball and that's it. I don't want to pursue you.”
7.
That soft, rosy filter clouding over Shirabu's eyes shattered quicker than it had formed. He shoved his hands in his pockets to hide the way his fingers trembled.
8.
“That's not why I came up to you—” he hated the burn of his cheeks, the lump in his throat “—I couldn't care less. I just wanted advice on setting...”

It was the flat out rejection that hurt him and the way Semi seemed unaffected that left him numb...
9.
But, in hindsight, that wasn't the very moment when Shirabu's heart broke. That was just a deep crack and the start of many others to follow.
10.
It wasn't his one and only soulmate straight-out rejecting him that broke his heart. It wasn't the way Semi would barely speak to him, or the way Semi couldn't stand being around him, or the way his eyes never looked at him fondly. Only glaring glances and eye rolls.
11.
It wasn't the fact Semi picked out all of Shirabu's flaws, the way Semi was the reason he started to think he wasn't good enough and the reason Shirabu's hope and self-confidence started to crumble away every night... Only for him to have to mould it back together by morning.
12.
It wasn't hearing Semi blatantly ignore him and wave off any soulmate talk directed at him. There were countless times Shirabu wanted to yell at him, wanted him to confess that he was his soulmate. But he never did. His screams stay lodged in his teeth as he shut his mouth-
13.
-and told everyone who asked him, “I haven't met them yet, who cares.” He ignored Semi's hard gaze. Shirabu didn't need that look. He made it clear already.
14.
The moment his heart broke also wasn't when Semi started having a girl on his arm. That caused a different onslaught of cracks to Shirabu's heart.

He started trying to find things in her that he didn't have. He needed to know what made him different.
15.
What made her special? Was it that she was prettier? Was it that she was nicer? Smarter? More fun? More social? What was it? He started to compare her to himself as a hobby... It didn't help that they were everywhere together too. He couldn't walk down the halls without-
16.
-running into them so he started to take the long way to classes and hiding himself in the library corners at lunch. She was there everyday after practice so Shirabu had to head home as soon as it ended, preferring to shower at home rather than hang around and watch Semi-
17.
-fall deeper in love with a girl Shirabu didn't even know the name of. He didn't want to know.

The rest of the team teased Semi for showing up with marks on his neck. Shirabu was dying to know what it felt like to be that close to him.
18.
Semi would talk about date ideas and Shirabu wished it was him he was taking on those dates.
19.
Shirabu would scroll past their cheesy statuses on social media and wished he could distort the photos, delete the words, fall into a hole and wake up in another universe where he and Semi fell in love... Or not wake up at all...
20.
No... It wasn't any of those moments that broke Shirabu's heart. There were countless nights he spent crying beneath blinding stars and a blur of days he spent feeling empty.

No... it was years later and Shirabu seeing Semi through the screen of his TV on stage.
21.
It was seeing him perform with his entire being singing such hypocritical songs about love, the crowd of thousands singing along, and hearing that cursed line...

“I never felt in place, But with you I found home.”
22.
That was it. That was the final crack needed to officially leave Shirabu's heart in ruins.

Shirabu had waited sixteen years to find his soulmate, to find what was supposed to be *his* home.. And now at 20 he watched as his supposedly fated home found home in another, -
23.
- burning the red knot on his finger right in front of Shirabu's eyes. Any hope Shirabu had finally burnt out. Everything was flooded out by waves of tears.
And when the red unravelled itself from around his trembling finger he felt more alone than he's ever been.
