Congratulations! You have a job offer to drive free groceries to those most in need in the middle of the pandemic. The elderly, new parents, children, those with illnesses, with disabilities, experiencing violence, persecution, or homelessness. 1/8
You’re a very experienced driver. You have a good driving record. You have 6-10 years banked behind the wheel with excellent instructors and great evaluations. 2/8
But you only have your learner’s permit. And can’t get the job without a full license. Chances are that no one else will deliver groceries to the people in need. But there's more. 3/8
Canada hasn’t been giving full licenses since 2019. The only way to get one is to enter a lottery. If selected, you must attend a COVID super-spreader exit test with 100s of drivers. If you can’t, or don’t, do the test, you won’t get the chance to for months on end. 4/8
This is not an imaginary scenario. This is the situation that thousands of newly trained doctors face across Canada face right now, trying to get their full license to practice medicine. 5/8
Doctors that got a spot at the exam must go in-person this weekend, in close quarters with 100s of other doctors. It will be their only chance in 2020. Others won’t get a chance until 2021 or later. Many doctors can’t get jobs that serve the communities that are most in need. 6/8
The senior doctors providing the exit exams and the licenses have turned a blind eye to this injustice. They refuse to offer the exam safely, or cancel the exam and grant full licenses. They are blocking universal, timely access to healthcare in the midst of a pandemic. 7/8
If you want you and your loved ones to have more doctors on call, shorter wait times, and service in more areas, demand the full licensing of newly trained doctors by the @MedCouncilCan and your government officials. Your life may depend on it. 8/8
