For love of all that is holy STOP USING "THE MONEY SHOT" TO DESCRIBE IMAGES YOU LIKE please men dear god
I'm getting a lot of replies to this that are some variation on "I've used this term and didn't mean anything crude by it, so it must be fine." The reason that you used the term & thought it's fine is because you learned it from *waves arms* the culture. 1/n
I'm really sorry to break it to you, but the culture is patriarchal and sexist. (And racist. And homophobic. And classist. And more.) If you just learned for the first time that a term in your lexicon originated in pornographic films, I'm sorry to be the bearer of that news. 2/n
There are lots of other words like this. "Seminal," for instance, which is even more commonly used in academic contexts. Look up its etymology. I apologize, again, for being the bearer of this news. 3/n
Want another one? How about "male" plugs and "female" receptacles in engineering. You may think that innocent, but then you might never have had men waggle their eyebrows at you and leer as they've used these terms. I have. Multiple times. 4/n
You might argue that words like this can be reclaimed. And sure, slurs can be reclaimed. "Gay" being the usual, go-to example. But ask yourself: who did the reclaiming there? Was it straight men? Was it people ignorant of why the word "gay" was supposed to be insulting? Nope. 5/n
So, I'm sorry if you found out today that a phrase you use to talk about pictures that you like refers to a specific type of pornographic scene. And I'm absolutely not shaming you if you're into that. YKINMK and it's all fine. But keep it out of NASA press briefings, thanks. 6/6
