every time Berejiklian lines up a softball interview about her sex life on the tabloid and shockjock circuit, more space opens up in the media she ignores to discuss corruption, probity, ministerial conduct, and the rock bottom standards of elected officials like Berejiklian.
about 20 years ago two feminist media academics did a study on the Pat O’Shane effect. When the tabloids ran O’Shane stories, routinely hypersexist and racist nonsense, media space opened up elsewhere for stories on Aboriginal people and/or women in public life.
worth recalling also that ten years ago, NSW Liberal politicians were absolutely adamant that a woman Premier must inevitably, by definition, be a captive puppet of party room factions and corrupt dealings. The Liberal Party mindset allowed for no other perspective.
given the evidence on Liberal Party politicians thinking, which is toxically misogynist and capable only of self-serving political strategy, it is safe to assume they still think any women leader is necessarily a captive regent of controlling factional warlords.
just to be clear, it is not ~meye~ view that women leaders are necessarily puppet regents of the faceless men who do the numbers. I am just recounting the publicly stated position of Liberal and National Party politicians.
