No fancy rocket launches to show off this week for @ISTEM_HDSB. But, our Grade 10 Classes capped off their first major project today. Want to hear about it? #OntEd #STEMeducation
Thread ⬇️
It's been challenging, running an integrated program across four subjects (Science, English, Civics/Careers, Math) during a pandemic while we are organized into quadmesters.
But @KerrySagark @MrNassara @MattMag76670246 and I are making it work.
How?
Every day we start our four classes on a combined Google Meet. Some days it's just our face to face kids. Some days we welcome everyone working at home and at school.
Building (rebuilding) community has been key!
Or first major project has been done in partnership with @YPI_cares, the Youth Philanthropy Initiative. Our program received a $5000 grant to donate to the local charity of our choice. @kategatto9
There was a catch!
Students had to, individually at first and then in small groups, select a social issue that is impacting our community and then find a charity that addresses that issue.
Individual students were researching their issue/charity since September.
Three weeks ago each student had to submit an individual video pitch (2 minutes) about why their issue/charity was the one that deserved the $5000 donation.
Students were asked to view their peers work.
All were told, "If you love your idea, stick with it. If you saw something you liked more, form a group. If you don't like your idea anymore, find one you liked more"
Groups were formed.
The real research began as students worked in groups of up to three people.
Each group was responsible for creating a 10 minute video presentation detailing their cause and charity.
Today we saw their completed pitches...along with an awesome keynote from @EugeniaDuodu!
Here are the four runner's up!
First, pitching we donate to the Burlington Food Bank.
@BurlFoodBank
Next, pitching we donate to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul
Third, a pitch for @HaltonLearnFDN
Our final runner up was asking us to donate to @BruceTrail_BTC
And finally, our winners were the group that asked us to donate $5000 to @HaltonWomensPl.
The @ISTEM_HDSB faculty were floored by the depth of research and the quality of work these students created.
Congrats to all involved.
I remain committed to my belief that we can ask students to engage in meaningful projects that change the world while also covering curriculum.
