5 Key Highlights from United’s 2-1 Win over PSG in the Champions League: a short thread.
1. Freedom of the CB’s in a back 3 to progress the ball.

Look at Luke Shaw’s positioning here as he pushes forward in the build up of an attack. He speeds up, forces the CB to stop momentarily, and coupled with Martial’s positioning, creates space to receive. Penalty won.
2. Tactical Discipline.

(A) McFred’s pace and mobility covered the defence and United consistently overloaded the half-spaces to stop PSG from progressing.

(B) United’s narrow shape and central press stopped Neymar and Di Maria from attacking the space behind their midfield.
3. Tactical Flexibility.

Ole changed from a 5-3-2 to a 4-4-2 Midfield Diamond. This allowed United to regain control with Pogba coming on to overload the midfield and the overall shape to remain compact, making it difficult for PSG to bypass.
4. On the Offence.

Martial and Rashford were acting as split strikers, constantly making runs into the channels to receive the ball in transition. Look at how we stretched their CB pairing here to create space for Bruno in a 1v1.
5. The Goal.

(A) With PSG’s forwards instructed to stay higher up the pitch, this created massive space for AWB on the right flank.

(B) Rashford notices the space left behind and when he receives the ball, the CB is not quick enough to close him down.
