For those of us without editorial power, we might also consider avoiding rewarding these papers with citation.
And yes, the waste of research labor on a project that doesn't get published is a shame, and a real loss. For early researchers, it might even mean the loss of a career. But as many folks have said and written recently, sometimes refusal is the right choice.
(This thread brought to you by my own perpetual angsting about one of my social media data projects. I think the ethical stakes there are much lower, which is why I haven't abandoned the project. But I still wrestle with it!)
