A few thoughts on the Pope’s support for same-sex unions

First let’s not pretend this is more radical than it actually is. The Pope isn’t redefining marriage or departing from historic Christian teaching or marching in the streets w/ a dildo hat. So everybody take a deep breath.
What the Pope IS doing is recognizing that gay people deserve access to realistic pathways for building family and relationships. He’s recognizing that there CAN be space for same-sex relationships to exist in the church and be holy.
This really shouldn’t be that controversial. The only reason it IS controversial is due to homophobic attitudes turning every single manifestation of same-sex love into hot gay sex and nothing else.
Same-sex covenantal friendships and unions have a LONG history in the church and only faded in the modern era as marriage monopolized all forms of intimacy, love, and relational attachment.
When Christians allow their opposition to gay marriage to turn into opposition to same-sex relationships whole-scale, they not only rob gay people of any way to access love and relational intimacy, they rob THEMSELVES of a foundational aspect of Christian community.
Pope Francis isn’t out there declaring same-sex marriage to be biblical. But he IS recognizing that we need more ways to experience relational connection beyond just marriage, especially for gay people.
Regardless of where you stand on same-sex marriage in the church, creating more avenues for family and relationships to exist outside of the boundaries of marriage is something worth celebrating for everyone.
