So I’m about to take off, this thought is gonna get interrupted....but something that just happened to me on YouTube/Facebook has me concerned.

So we’re all aware of the racism in tech issues, about how bias etc seeps into programming in harmful and insidious ways. Cool. But right now big tech in general is harmful, see the current Facebook scandals. Them, YouTube and others are constantly having to figure out new ways

To stop radicalizing basically white kids. And their at least making some efforts. The YouTube algorithm would send white kids down a nazi rabbit hole after *8* auto played videos https://www.technologyreview.com/2020/01/29/276000/a-study-of-youtube-comments-shows-how-its-turning-people-onto-the-alt-right/

Anyways, I think we’re gonna see that the same inherent bias that was exhibited in algorithms is also going to lead to a delayed response in preventing those same outcomes for people of color.

So now YouTube etc are investing millions into stopping the radicalization of white kids...but what if that same bias keeps them from completely overlooking The radicalization of POC? Like who are the black people in THAT room?

I’ll finish when I land. But my YouTube knows I’m black. I also watch nothing but puppy, cooking, and documentaries on there. Nothing remotely radical or political. It’s starting recommending ice cube related videos in my auto play. I don’t even watch music videos on there

And I genuinely can’t help but think it’s because YouTube realized “black male” and it’s algo is still promoting divisive content to that audience, like it used to white men. Except their working to make sure it doesn’t do that for them...

Anyways, I’ll look into it later and this is just my anecdotal evidence. But knowing how bias works in those sort of organizations...
