I've spent most of today talking to many traders in #Cork city who held badges in support of the Save Cork City campaign. Their photos are on the group's website.
Many admit to not being fully informed on the complexities involved.
I can't blame them, tbh.
Maybe it's a failure on our part.
Failure to fully explain.
Maybe it's because it's gone on for so long.
A few things stand out.
1. Everyone wants what's best for the city.
2. Many don't realise that the tidal barrier option HAS been examined.
3. Most believe flood defences in Bandon and Skib failed recently. They didn't. https://www.irishexaminer.com/opinion/commentanalysis/arid-40038293.html
4. Few trust the OPW to respect city's heritage
5. Many don't want to go on the record.
6. All agree with SCC's overall aim to get what's best for the city, but most accept that an urgent solution is needed.
7. Most agree that a tidal barrier can't be delivered urgently.
8. Several said while they still support SCC, they believe a compromise is needed.
9. They want dialogue, a knocking together of heads.
10. One suggested that the removal of parking entirely from Morrison's Island design might help break the impasse.
