You guys know that when a three year old doesn’t see their parents for three years...they don’t remember they have parents, right?
That’s why this entire ‘we can’t find their parents’ isn’t about an oopsie, but is about genocide. Destroying the parent/child bond is how destruction of culture, community, and history happens.
Those kids may be physically and even emotionally just fine with their loving new parents. That is the *problem*. Their real parents are rendered not just unnecessary, but ‘the enemy.’
So it’s not just that parent/child need to be reunited (then deported, kicked out, removed), but that we who caused this need to pay for the lifelong process of repairing that parent/child bond in culturally specific ways.
How old does a kid have to be before they remember they have parents and are able to advocate for themselves?
How old does a kid have to be before they finally forgot their mother’s language and are able to converse in the language of their adopters? Do they still remember they have parents already?
How many kids have had their mothers language torn from their memories by three years of time? Kids have the human right to their indigenous languages.
How many of the older kids were rendered compliant by officers and social workers telling them your parents didn’t want you. Your parents just left you here. Your parents didn’t love you. How many of those kids feel grateful now, bcz somebody did want them.
The violence is catastrophic. Unimaginable. Generational. If you were a stolen child, how trusting and open would you be when you have your own child?
This is not just another election cycle issue to scream hyperbole over and move on.
The violence of language: ‘can’t find.’
Like keys.
Elections will not solve this little mystery of the misplaced parents or the USs tendency to helpfully do the misplacing. What are we going to do about it?
it's not just parent/child, it's extended family too. https://twitter.com/TheTinaVasquez/status/1318992151137714179
