A few weeks ago, I promised a Day in the Life video to all the @FuturePedsRes applicants to show life here at @NCHPedsRes.

Unfortunately, we had some issues with the footage and the video is lost to time. Instead, it’ll be a tweet thread with plenty of Stevie! Let’s go!
For a quick into, I’m a PGY-2, went to UIC-Rockford for my MD, undergrad at Augustana College in IL. Planning to go into primary care or hospital medicine after graduation.
This is a timeline for a typical day on an inpatient service and is reflective of the day we tried to make the video.

5:00 AM - alarm goes off, get dressed for a 4 mile run through German Village, a neighborhood with brick streets near the hospital where I live
5:45-6:30 - return from run, shower, pack lunch, eat breakfast, quick snuggle with Stevie and we’re out the door for my 10 minute walk to work
6:45 - arrive to the floor, login, chat with team about day ahead

7:00-7:30 - signout from the night team

7:30-9:00 - pre-rounding, see patients, prep discharges, touch base with fellow/attending
9:00-varies - family-centered rounds. Senior residents typically lead rounds and resident teams collaborate with our attendings on plans of care.

Once rounds end, we take time to call new consults, complete discharges, and start progress notes.
12:00 - lunch time and lecture. All are on Zoom now with occasional socially distanced in-person Tuesday didactics

Lunch options vary, but our program provides badge $ that can be spent at on-campus Koko’s, Subway, Panera, coffee shop, and cafeteria. I bring my lunch most days!
Sidebar: Stevie brings her lunch to daycare every day too!
1:00-3:00 - early afternoons are typically taken for time to work on notes, finish consult calls, do procedures (especially on ID floor), and admit new patients as they come in. This time can be highly varied!
3:00-3:30 - chalk talk with attending/fellow/senior resident about something relevant to a patient case from that day.

3:30-3:45 - CODE WHITE (emergency ice cream). Not an every day thing, but a nice treat at the end of the day.
3:45-5:30 - complete notes, finish seeing new admits, plan ahead for tomorrow, get signout ready for night team

5:30-6:00 - give night team signout over the phone (phone call to allow for social distancing, night teams are in-house)
6:00 - walk back home to get the best greeting ever!
6:30 - eat dinner with @jbac8 and this night, we decided to head down to the Scioto Riverfront in downtown Columbus to watch the sunset
After that it’s come back home and relax for the rest of the evening!
All in all, I love our program. It is supportive and has allowed me to grow as a pediatrician so much in 18 months. Everyone, from our PD to our administrators, are always approachable and willing to help you meet any goal you want to achieve.
Columbus is the perfect Midwestern city. Large population with a lot of diversity, but doesn’t feel like the 14th-largest city in the US. Food is excellent and the sports scene is great!
For anyone interested in learning more about our program, my DMs are always open. Wishing all of you the best of luck in this application cycle. Can’t wait to meet you guys!
