#RMonologue today marks two years since mono dropped and changed all our lived and continues to do so. here is a thread about mono's production, what it means to me and how much its changed all our lives [thread]
we should understand why namjoon named his playlist mono. the word mono can mean one. it can mean black and white. it can also mean something different when paired with another word. to me, it felt like joon wanted to define what mono meant solely to him and did with his playlist
in his vlive, namjoon mentioned that mono was an album that defined who he was during the years 2016 to 2018. this was also around the same years when wing and love yourself her dropped and bts' "exploded" into the west
something interesting namjoon adds is how there was a phase in his life where he was very much into "grey tones" and "mono" clothing but something changed. incorporating colors into his life, studio and wardrobe was something foreign to him and new but it was important too.
namjoon also explained the reasoning behind his album art and his choice not to publish any official lyrics. in a way, it feels like namjoon left these "blank spaces" so we could communicate and have each others words and silences be understood.
you can also see that namjoon clearly had put in a lot of thought into why he didnt want to release any official lyrics. in a way, it means our interpretations of mono cant be entirely right but they arent wrong either. it can mean different things to namjoon and us as well.
ok lets begin! the next tweets that are to follow are my OWN interpretations of namjoon's lyrics. i can most definitely be wrong and probably am. the lyrics ive taken are from genius and doolsetbangtan. pls remember to watch namjoon's vlive! https://www.vlive.tv/video/96907
01 tokyo; it can be interpreted as the capital of japan. but in hangul, the word for tokyo is 東京 and has the same diction for the word that means longing. the juxtaposition between yearning for something that cant be met in one of the biggest cities shouldnt go unoticed
there's been discourse on tokyo's lyrics that i find fascinating. but for the most part, the lyrics that struck me the most is namjoon's reference of his older self to the italian tale 'pinnochio'. the tale talks all about a young boy finding his place in the world and love.
namjoon explained how it felt like to listen to tokyo for the first time and how he fell in love with it, for no reason at all. he was super excited to work with it and knew he wanted it too.
02 seoul; namjoon listened to honne's beat every single day after it was sent and wondered. he then realized it was the most perfect way to describe seoul. its interesting to notice that seoul could stand for seoul, south korea's capital or soul or both at the same time.
seoul's lyrics make it difficult to understand whether or not namjoon truly loves seoul. but the fact that it is a part of him, under his skin and an important part of his identity is undeniable. it scares him how much he's grown to love it but its already too late
namjoon also talked of how seoul was a tribute of his own. he talked of how difficult it was to write exactly what he felt and materialize his own thoughts "but that is what an artist does"
03 moonchild; the next track that follows seoul is moonchild. namjoon affectionately calls us his moonchildren in his vlive
something interesting to know is namjoon has already made a reference to moonchild in 4 o'clock lyrics in 2017. namjoon admitted he wrote moonchild long before his duet with taehyung. namjoon also talked of his reasoning to write an ode for "moonchildren"
in moonchild, namjoon talks of support and love. he makes us feel less alone in what we feel and do. he tells us, "its okay to tell the world what you feel" because surely someone will be comforted by our words and love in ways we dont even recognise.
04 badbye; the juxtaposition between aeon's soft vocals and the lyrics going "kill me softly" gives badbye a haunting but irresistible tone. namjoon admits its short but thats what makes it perfect.
namjoon also talked of his deliberate choice to work with aeon for badbye. the fact that namjoon got to work with some of his favourite artists and childhood heroes in an album that speaks so much to him warms my heart.
05 uhgood; the original title of the song translates into 어긋 (uh-geut), which means to either fall short of expectations or miss each other by going in different routes. the irony is how the korean title’s negative energy is directly opposed to the english title's positivity.
in uhgood's lyrics, joon describes the torment that comes along with relying on yourself for comfort. he battles with coming to terms with himself and talks of the longing to connect between the persona he sees vs who he really is and decides to never give up on himself.
an interesting thing to note is that initially, uhgood was supposed to be reflection. namjoon came with different versions but recorded uhgood entirely again. he loves the track and its title.
06 everythingoes; namjoon said everythingoes was a phrase and a mantra that he kept repeating to himself and wanted to tell people to hold onto.
namjoon said he had the idea for everythingoes in 2016 when they were filming bon voyage s1. namjoon also talked of the advice his counselor gave him which he decided to incorporate into everythingoes.
everythingoes' lyrics are devastatingly beautiful and poignant. joon talks of the transition between seasons and how trees bear fruits as a metaphor to the way life goes on and continues after each loss. he reminds us how pain passes through all of us but it too shall pass.
07 forever rain; the last and final track in mono. namjoon described forever rain as the song he wanted played at his funeral, describing it as a song that no other track of his could be capable of being him more.
namjoon talked how he insisted he wanted the word "rain" in his title track and how badly he wanted to produce the whole song. he said he used the word "forever" because he wondered if he could make a song that touched his heart again.
in forever rain's lyrics, namjoon akins rain to a silent friend who comforts him when he needs it the most. he talks of being alone and not feeling understood by anyone but the rain. in here, he talks about how words dont always have to be exchanged for comfort.
at the end, namjoon talked of how and why mono was truly born. he also talked of how he wished certain songs from mono would bring back memories to us and hoped they were songs we could hear when we needed it the most.
mono holds a different meaning to all of us. it has comforted us in ways we needed it, in moments we've felt like we've had no one. i hope he knows that he was successful in what he wanted the album to mean and that more than anything we're grateful for his existence and his love
mono remains as a reminder that it is okay to feel, to venture out and wander uselessly before coming back home. it is a gentle reminder that we are not alone in what we feel and what we feel is what truly makes us human. thank you namjoon #RMonologue https://open.spotify.com/album/0XqAZHNx0xJDObehTI2587
