Only 21.3% of Scotland's final energy consumption is from renewable energy and as we decarbonise heat and transport through electrification we need to increase renewable capacity hugely. There's no way we can meet climate targets without some areas being massive exporters.
Does that mean the current system is good? Absolutely not. There's a huge amount that needs fixed and rural areas exporting renewables south need a much better deal.
But it's easier as councillors to oppose developments and win votes than change the system and win votes.
