1. the international community has never been of any help to any troubled nation. in the rare occasion that it is not the same set of politicians, they are often too steep in their own politics and corruption to be of any sustainable assistance. this is a world of oligarchy.
2. Nigerians had cause and were inclined to look behind the democratic veil. what they discovered was something their parents had discovered long before: skeletons, the sham of a system this country is, and the true faces of their very own devils. this came to a head on 20/10/20.
3. On 20/10/20 the Nigerian ‘Government’ ran out of something it has always had in extremely low supplies when dealing with civilians: respect, diplomacy and humanity. so it resorted to something it has in abundance: underhanded civilian control tactics aka fear.
First it aimed to corrupt and disperse many of the protests by paying off the leaders. but this was of limited effect because the nigerian youth were wise to this tactic and decided they had no leader. self-appointed leaders were immediately disowned and disempowered (segalinks).
unfortunately this is the only tool of diplomacy the nigerian government has. every other thing that follows is military warfare and was done not to placate the protesting masses but to appear, even in the slightest, law-abiding in the international community.
leaders were appointed for the protests by the nigerian government who made a show of an agreement to end the protests. when this had received some publicity, mercenaries were inserted into the protests to create a narrative of violence and disorder.
the nigerian public health body, ncdc, also immediately labelled protests as genuine risks. meanwhile the nigerian military immediately started labelling a series of news outlets as fake news - something ignorable but of large consequence later.
all of these served to reduce the legitimacy of the protests and brew suspicion. the protesters themselves had some minor internal quarrels. but driven as they were, they proceeded, playing still on publicity, legitimacy and international support. but the scene was already set.
so on 20/10/20 the nigerian government, having done the dirty civilian chore of creating a narrative, employed the military in the massacre of its own citizens. a curfew was announced on grounds of civilian disorder (as above) and the military were rolled out.
remember that at this point the nigerian military has continued to label both fake and good news as fake, so naturally there was precedence for them to also label allegations of a genocide as fake without seeming particular. this was the point all along.
alongside these they also maintained civilian violence in other parts of the nation, not only as a distraction but as grounds for further military action if determined necessary.
i didn’t mean to go into the details but these are the fine depths of oligarchy and the ultimate dangers of being forced to submit sovereignty and accept an all empowered government.
i dare say there is no solution for bad governance, just as there is no solution to bad destiny. the only thing one can hope for is power to overcome destiny, which translates today to money. so if someone asks you why igbos like money, show them this thread.
