We could have tried to protect every person, to collectively act as a country to stop the virus. Instead we got an asset-stripping kleptocracy, who murdered the weak. The public went along with it because they thought the equity in their houses was worth more than anything.
I spent a decade writing about the Holocaust. There’s a question people always ask: how were normal people convinced to go along with it. Now you know. It isn’t comparable, but every day for half a year the Telegraph has argued for just letting old and disabled people die. And
I come on twitter every day and people are, en masse, making the same arguments: that the lives of older people, disabled people, immunosuppressed people, poor people, BAME people, are not worthy of protection. Or if they are protection means “locking them up.” I never thought I

I find the whole thing utterly disturbing. Even more so when there are good ways to stop the virus (all evidence shows a very solid 10 week lockdown, followed by proper contact tracing and real case isolation - as opposed to a message to “stay at home” - actually works.) This
Effective cure to our collective sickness could be enacted at any time. We know it would work. It is significantly better than “living with the virus.”
