As many of us know, queer women are being fetishized by [a lot of] men on a daily basis. Although I know it is an issue we need to deal with (and I could never stress how important it is to deal with this issue), I would like to draw attention to a problem with the same sources
of conflict. Just as queer women are being sexualized by some men, many women sexualize queer men (although often more subtle than a lot of men). Just like feminist icon Emma Watson, it's incredibly important for me to fight for all issues and not just my own.
This is something I believe everyone should aspire to do. However, I have noticed that when talking about our struggles, we often forget that there's more than one side of the story .
I am not saying that queer women being fetishized and queer men being fetishized are opposing sides. Absolutely not. What I am trying to say is actually the opposite. We get so lost in our own struggles that we tend to forget that others might go through something similar.
What is important to remember however, is that seeing other people does not wipe you out. One issue does not cancel out the other. Our struggle isn't always limited to just us.
Other people could be dealing with similar problems, and not seeing those who suffer with you invalidates them and their story.
Anyways, that was my Wednesday rant. Thanks for coming to my TED talk :)
