u don’t have to be white to be an agent of white supremacy
whiteness is an entity living through white people, living through nonwhite ppl too. it definitely plays a role in how u maneuver the system. maybe it’s a survival skill, maybe it’s comfort, but whiteness is a plague of violent insecurity.
an important thing to ask is how are u upholding white supremacy in your day to day life? in your routine? in your thoughts and patterns? in your interactions? in your actions, even the small ones? what are you doing to combat that?
if your answer to combatting your colonial/colonized behaviors is avoiding it all together then are you really combatting it? are you avoiding engaging in certain conversations or engaging with certain people out of your insecurity?
do you blame this on anxiety? why are you anxious? do you prematurely flee from the conversation? do you overcompensate and throw yourself a pity party? why is it about you? are you more afraid of being confronted, cancelled, or “ruining the fun”?
why is your desire for fun and comfort more of a priority than the discomfort and violence towards BIPOC? have you stopped to consider the environment you are playing a role in creating? is it “none of your business” or are you being complicit? are you actively being anti-racist?
are you afraid of applying anti-racist practices? why are you afraid? what do you have to lose if you do? will you lose your friends if you are anti-racist? are your friends racist? are you comfortable with your friends being racist? is it really a difference of opinion to you?
do you think a black/brown person needs to “loosen up” or are you not taking them seriously? do you think they are being too harsh or do you feel attacked? are you taking this personally or are you willing to accept that these are issues rooted deeper than your ego?
what do you do when a black or brown person is in the room versus when they aren’t? are you willing to be anti-racist without them? are you willing to be anti-racist without an audience? are you willing to have the conversations? Do you? Do you have the need to prove it?
why do you need to prove it? what are you trying to prove? who are you trying to prove this to? is it damage control? have you avoided something until you couldn’t? do you brush things under the rug? have you made excuses for yourself or your friends? why did you make excuses?
are you feeding your ego? are you protecting yourself from a realization? from a truth? from a lie? what is the truth or lie? what will it cost you to confront it? what will it cost another person for you to avoid it?
these are just some of the many questions that can be asked when it comes to challenging whiteness. some of these I’ve asked of others, some I’ve asked myself, some I’ve asked both.
it’s about overcoming the entity of white supremacy which is a tool of capitalism. we need to actively challenge it
