New cancer treatments only become available thru research. While there are often announcements of "breakthroughs" in cancer, these discoveries are often only in "bench research" conducted in cell lines, mouse models or potentially organoids 1/5 #bcam
Cell lines are groups of cancer cells that are harvested from a donor & then grown in a lab so that research can be conducted on them. Mouse models basically involve giving mice cancer & then treating them with whatever agent is being tested. #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth #bcam 2/5
Organoids are more complex and can help more closely mimic cancer growing in an organ (rather than a petri dish or mouse). #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth #bcam #CancerResearch 3/5
This bench research is a great first step but it is only the beginning. Before new therapies can be approved by the FDA, and made available to patients, they must go through the clinical trial process. (And that will be tomorrow's post!) 4/4 (I was more concise than I thought!)
