Given a lot of thought to what the Greens should do for their next term in Parliament. I think they have an opportunity to get the best of both worlds, and that they should accept a deal with Labour to enter an arrangement. Here’s why:
After both times the Greens have had an arrangement with Labour, they’ve increased their vote at the subsequent election. I think especially in this election, voters saw the way the Greens worked constructively with Labour to achieve better outcomes for people and planet.
They voted for the Greens to be a progressive heart of the next Government. Obviously that isn’t possible to the extent voters thought as Labour have a majority, but there will be a possibility for the Greens to hold a couple of portfolios, and have a more limited arrangement.
The Greens, and their delegates, should accept this arrangement. It allows the Greens to practically achieve wins, as well as advocate for the Government to go further - both inside & outside the tent. It’s the best of both worlds for their two types of voters.
It not only practically benefits the urgent areas that need addressing, climate, biodiversity, and inequality - but politically benefits them too as Greens can continue to shift the overton window, and grow a mandate for greater change.
The Greens have a stronger caucus this term, with both strong activist ties and experience in Government. Both of these strengths should be maximised in this next term.
