Simply put, a VPN encrypts and reroutes your browsing activity through many servers to make it seem like you're in an alternate location to your true one.

1. Company Jurisdiction - It is important to know where your VPN provider of choice is headquartered. as data laws vary from country to country. In certain places, the government or law enforcement can request user data and the provider would be legally obliged to comply.

The British Virgin Islands, Hong Kong, Romania, Bulgaria, Sweden, Singapore, Panama & Netherlands are countries with more favourable legislation.

2. Logging Policy - Some providers store user data and resel it to third-parties (which is generally how free VPNs make their money). So it is important to make sure the provider you go with has a clear cut logging policy stated on their website.

3. Encryption - Check to be sure they offer Military-Grade 'end-to-end' encryption. OpenVPN or IKEv2/IPsec protocols are the most commonly used for their reliability.

Free VPNs generally offer little top no encryption which again leaves you exposed and vulnerable to having your browsing activity intercepted by people with malicious intent.

4. History of breaches & attacks - No one is truly immune to hacking really, but its important to know how well the breach was handled. A quick "XYZ VPN hack/data breach" Google search should help out with this.

5. Bandwith and Data Caps - Free VPNs will generally slow down your connection speed and offer limited usage with low data caps.

Moral of the story is PAY FOR A VPN IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT.
