/2 The year was 1989. I was 20, a junior in college, working at a CBS News in D.C. for Fall quarter doing an internship with Rita Braver, who was then the Supreme Court correspondent.

Late one afternoon I was moping about the CBS DC studio looking for something to do.
/3 Suddenly, I spotted a young blonde woman over by the copier. I figured she was another intern I hadn't met yet. Why not, I thought, walk over there and introduce myself? Only wonderful things could happen.
/4 So I strode over for a little of the ol' how-YOU-doin'.

In my defense, (1) it was 1989, (2) I was 20, and (3) I had been denying for several years that I was nearsighted and needed glasses badly.
/5 I walked over, leaned jauntily against the wall, opened my mouth, and yes it was Leslie Stahl and not and intern and oh shit now what
/6 [roughly from memory]

Me: . . .

LS: . . . .

Me: . . .

LS: ?

Me: . . . . so, that's a copier

LS: Yes. I believe it is.

Me: Ah.
/7 It occurred to me that there were a number of Supreme Court briefs that I should review in order to be prepared to assist Ms. Braver at upcoming arguments, and so I went to review them for several hours in a convenient stairwell.
/8 I did not encounter Ms. Stahl again.
As it turns out you can do a whole lot of work in journalism without necessarily going into the office or without taking off a hat and sunglasses if you do. Also now I walk out of the room when she comes on 60 minutes.
/9 My point, @realDonaldTrump, is that we all have foibles and lapses in judgment and periods of immaturity, and if you just hang in there 30 years, give or take, I'm sure humiliating yourself will sting somewhat less most of the time.

Very truly yours,

Ken
