1. This is the most important thread I've written in years. Please RT. Two years ago, London City Council became the first government in Canada to ditch First-Past-the-Post. The results were astounding. Take a moment to watch this short video:
2. Next week, @UnlockCanada is launching a brand new report about London's historic experiment. The report, #LondonLeads, is the product of months of research, and years of advocacy. RSVP here: https://bit.ly/3o0jCEm
3. I'll be joined by an INCREDIBLE line-up of voices from London, including the City Clerk, the city's first female Black councillor, two deputy mayors, the President of @ULLdn and the MPP who started it all!
4. Why is this so urgent, today? Because Doug Ford's government has just announced, minutes ago, that they're planning to force London to switch back to First Past the Post and ban all Ontario's 444 cities from switching to a more democratic voting system. https://www.cp24.com/news/ford-government-moves-to-scrap-ranked-ballot-elections-for-ontario-municipalities-1.5153128
5. This is striking, because London's City Council earned one of the largest mandates in Ontario, well above 50% of the vote. While Ford's government barely got 40% of the vote. The province shouldn't micromanage our local councils, and suffocate democratic reform.
6. Here's one simple example of how transformative London's 2018 election was. First-Past-The-Post almost always pushes races towards a polarized two-frontrunner race. But using ranked ballots, London broke the mold and emerged as an outlier. Check out these two charts:
7. Join us on Monday night, to learn more about Canada's first ranked ballot election - and why this is worth fighting for. RSVP: https://bit.ly/3o0jCEm
