What's happening in Chile and the burned church, a thread by a chilean person:

As context, Chile went through a phase of militar dictatorship, from 1973 to 1990, the dictator being called Augusto Pinochet. People was tortured and killed, and to this day we've 1210 people that disappeared during this time, about whom we know nothing yet.

One of the things that this dark period left was the constitution, our mother of laws, written by a selected group of persons in 1980, among whom was the dictator Pinochet. This constitution is, to this day, working on Chile, thirthy years after.

Back to present: 14 October, 2019, there was a raise on the price of the metro, transport medium, which was something for which we already payed for. Then, teenagers went out to destroy the cabins in which the metro was payed, so people could use it for free.

This went on until 18 October, were armed forces were deployed. They went against this group of teenagers, and repressed, attacks including tear gas bombs. That Friday ended with a station of metro burned, teenagers bleeding on hospitals for getting shot.

The new of the armed forces was shared, which made a lot of people go out to protest too, instigating more fight. Meanwhile, wanna know where president Sebastian Piñera was? Eating pizza. Chile was BLEEDING and being SET ON FIRE and he was... eating pizza.

Don't be fooled: the metro wasn't the sole reason: terrible expensive education, private water, poor health, the armed forces and their story in dictatorship, and so the list goes on. Metro was the drop that overflowed the glass.

The choisen solution for all of this? To write a new constitution, to leave behind the one of dictatorship. Covid got in the way of the process, postponing it, and now, the plebiscite of "do u want to change the constitution?" is going to happen 25th October.

And for this, protests are starting again. And as we fight with stones and steaks, armed forces silence us with gun power and machines. They blind us, with people getting shot in the eyes and losing their vision, at the sight of everyone. We're been killed.

The church being burned was not by the protestors, but rather at the hands of the armed forces, who do this to put the blame on us, protestors, to make us the bad guys. To justify the killing, the bleeding, the hurting. It's been a year of this unfair fight.

And this ends Sunday. History for my country is changing 25th October. So I IMPLORE YOU to share this. Please. We are being killed, and we've been for moths without people knowing. Share the truth. Share what's happening to my people, to me.

Any question, I'm open to answer. There's a lot more, so much more about all of this. This is just the point of the iceberg. And as one of the teenagers that started fighting that 14th October, I know for what I'm fighting for, why Chile is bleeding.

So please, put your eyes on my country at the south of the world... and pray. We need it right now. And know what's happening. This is no foul play. The church was burning, and my people is dying, so why does a building matter more that chilean lives?
