A white dude I was pretty cool with told me he wasn’t voting this year or he’d vote third party or write in Bernie. I told him that just wasn’t a choice I could stand as a Black person. I feel those decisions put Black people in peril. So he emailed me.
In the email he basically said that some of the Black activists he follows weren’t going to vote and that encouraged him not to vote as well. He couldn’t see the fallacy in the fact that HE cherry picked those activists that already affirmed his choice to abstain.
So here I am. A whole entire Black person he’s known for years. He knows my politics. Maybe to some extent would consider us friends or at least friendly. And keep in mind my views on voting align with the majority of Black people. Pragmatic but active democratic voters.
But since he had his cherry picked Black woke faves he had already decided my opinion didn’t really matter. When I brought up we were friends he suddenly flipped it to “I wouldn’t day we were friends.” Which I mean cool but he knew I meant it in the colloquial sense. Smh
He offered to sort of debate about it but knew he wouldn’t budge and frankly after downplaying the relationship I wasn’t interested in talking further. If we’re not friends I’m not going to let you keep taking up my time. So I never replied back.
But that last retweet sums up how I feel. He was a white dude who would rather write in a bicycle on a ballot than see the Black condition improve in any way. And sadly a lot of Wokes™️ who promote voter apathy pave the way for people like him. Providing cover for “allies.”
I mean why not cite Ice Cube or Kanye? It’s the same end result as Noname or Bree. If you’re a who’re person that doesn’t want to vote you can easily hide behind a misfit Black person who promotes voter apathy. And you never have to say you’re a bad ally.
