okay y’all, here’s the tea on what’s going on in iran with #ThereIsNoInsulin:

there’s been a significant shortage of analogue insulin the last two weeks. people who use insulin are being forced to use NPH/R & are being told there is no other choice if they want to stay alive 1/
there is also a shortage of test strips, so people now using NPH/R for the first time are not able to monitor their blood glucose. a group of 150+ doctors wrote to the iranian government about it and were assured it would be taken care of ASAP, but that was over a month ago. 2/
the government has said they are trying to import analogues but current sanctions make that difficult. there are two pharma companies that operate facilities in iran that are attempting to address the situation but only anticipate meeting needs as soon as November 3/
although insulin was already difficult to access previously, there was always enough. on top of zero access to CGM’s and pumps, people with diabetes in iran are in a dire situation. when they say #ThereIsNoInsulin, it means exactly that. 4/
so what can we do? the first step is making noise internationally. the iranian government heavily censors its citizens, so PWD may not feel safe speaking up. repost this image & use these hashtags on social media:
#ThereIsNoInsulin
#انسولین_نیست
#insulin4all 5/
(if you have press contacts, send them a tip about this too! getting the word out is KEY.) 6/
second action item is figuring out what orgs can help put insulin in the hands of people with diabetes in iran. again, sanctions make this difficult but if anyone wants to help do research and outreach let me know! 7/7
