I’m tearing up. I’m so happy. I’ve been wishing for this day for ten years now. Can’t believe it’s real! And the severed arm omg!

My degree is in History and let me just say, this is an official victory for Portland history 🥳 https://twitter.com/sfkale/status/1318574017268178944
I went to look for some private notes I had on everything Harvey Scott did to hurt this state, and it’s like 10 pages of long-winded shit, WHY did I leave myself this
Do you ever get pissed late at night and write an over-researched Google doc rant on a historical figure u hate, so you can move on with your life or is that just me
CLASSIC situation: Harvey Scott (and Abigail Scott Duniway)’s dad wanted to go out west, and their mom was like ...no, I will die. They went anyway and ...she died.

Listen to women wtf right
As is well-known, Harvey Scott decided to invest his time out west by volunteering for a local militia for the express task of killing Native Americans in order to take their land by force.

(Looks like I didn’t finish my homework here)
Harvey Scott was the first person to graduate from the new Pacific University at Forest Grove, and he was head of his class.

This sounds mildly impressive until you hear that he was the ONLY member of his class, again showing meritocracy is a scam
Harvey Scott immediately started doing Official Settler Govt things, and became (diff times):

Portland Library Librarian
Member of the Oregon Bar
Editor of The Oregonian
Collector of Customs
Pres. of the Oregon Historical Society
Pres. of the 1904 Lewis & Clark Exposition
He basically graduated from college, immediately became the librarian, passed the Bar a year later (no need for law school), and became Editor of the Oregonian at 28 and stayed for 45 YEARS

b/c

only literate white men were allowed to fail up and Oregon was still importing those
petition to adjust 19th century government titles for grade inflation
I now notice that past me did not think he was failing up, but that he worked hard to get to a place where he could shit on people 🤷🏻‍♀️
Looks like the primary sources in this document are about to get into some serious Harvey Scott racism, quick warning
I’m not cherry picking here, or removing from context. After his death, the Oregon Historical Society (echoed he had been president of) published a full memorial issue, including an overview of views and quotes. I’m going to pull from THAT.
Scott is anti-slavery, but sees the slavery-equivalent treatment of Blacks in the post-Civil War South as too inevitable to fight. This abandonment of Black rights reveals views of the inferiority of Blacks, and matches with his racist views elsewhere. This is white supremacy.
