Sanjeev Kumar Singh was out on duty when he saw the son of a State minister pass lewd comments on a girl. The next thing he did was thrash the son of a powerful minister, all in public. This is Sanjeev Kumar Singh. He died this Friday and I'd want you to know about his life.
This thread might seem like a script straight outta movies but it's real. Sanjeev Kumar Singh, the man who played a crucial role in shaping NIA, led probe into the 2016 Pathankot attack and tracked the perpetrators of 26/11 is one of the most ideal examples of a civil servant.
One day, he saw a girl fall into a ditch. Again, without any second thoughts he jumped out of his moving car and saved her. This is heroism man. He could have easily asked someone to do it and get all the appreciation for it. But he did it himself, not caring about anything else.
His son recalls how one night his father came back home after a very long day at work and suddenly realised his driver KP Singh didn't have dinner. He called KP Singh, made roti and dal for him and made sure he had his dinner before he went to sleep.
He was not only a righteous officer, he was one of the fittest ones too. Accepting Modi ji's Fit India challenge he posted videos of him doing pushups and lifting heavy weights which had gone viral. He tweeted, "I am Sanjeev Kumar and I am 58+. If I can do it, you can too"
He was also awarded with the Sword of Honor for being the most physically fit IPS Officer but as fate would have it, he passed away suddenly and untimely. It was only two weeks back I met him and was moved by his divine aura. The gravity in his personality was very unique to him.
There is an area named Sanjeevnagar in Bhopal, where he served for most of his life. He is hugely loved and respected there and naming a place after him would make his legacy live on forever.
When I think about him now, I realise that I was sitting in the same room with a man who should have won a Padmashree for his service to the nation but he spent all his life working behind the curtains, trying to fix the system we keep complaining about.
Trivia is that the team headed by him found the perpetrators of 26/11 by using emails and advance software for the very first time. He was also respected across parties and was appointed to different roles under different parties.
We as a generation glorify actors and businessmen but very rarely we acknowledge the real heroes of our country. The ones who actually work towards bringing the change we all want to be a part of. The ones who do their jobs selflessly, endlessly and honestly for the country.
He left his two very young sons and a beautiful wife this Friday but it's not just the loss of the family, it's a loss for the entire nation because there are very few left like him in a system run by greed and agenda. As his son said, "Maybe God needed Papa more than we did."
I wish I could sit a little longer with you Sir. I wish I could hear about your brilliant life in your own words and realise it was not brilliance you were running after, it was justness and equality. I salute you Sir and for the hundredth time- thankyou for your service. 🙏
