Working from home as a mum. Some thoughts. 1/5
This past month has been the most important so far in my new(ish) role, & my kid has had some sort of post-viral cough, meaning 3-4 long interruptions nightly & very broken mornings.
2/5 Most times not commuting has meant an extra hr in bed. Sometimes when needed I've logged on a half hour or so late. Instead of being broken all day, I then delivered at 100%. Through this & any appts I've had, my team has been nothing but understanding.
3/5 But I remember a job or two ago, fueled with late nights, big headlines, an adrenaline-filled role & a non-pandemic skip in my step, I was arrogant. I'd look at working mums & sometimes worried they were less reliable. Yep I said it. All those new nursery germs.
4/5 I'm quite ashamed I ever thought this, even subconsciously. Because now I know how much juggling is involved, & I see parents handling it like heroes. I feel like a hero. I can't believe how much wfh has helped me perform against the odds. Tired, stressed. But delivering.
5/5 The fact is, it was never that parents weren't working efficiently. The working world was.

This year's a wake up call for some employers (not mine). It's a life work balance, not a work life balance. That's it, y'know, I just needed to fess up. #workingmum #WorkFromHome
