New paper alert! @daarnon , me, and @MRubin11 examine depopulation outcomes in Palestinian villages during the 1948 War in Mandate Palestine. We argue that community social cohesion allowed some villages to preemptively evacuate before the war came 1/4 https://preprints.apsanet.org/engage/apsa/article-details/5f8ee55ca0f2a70019ceef47
We contrast this outcome with villages that either stayed in Israeli territory, or were violently depopulated by the Haganah/Israelis. To do this, we leverage new data on Palestinian villages that was collected from the Israeli archives 2/4
This information, known as the "Village Files", contained information on the social structure of Palestinian villages in the 1940s. We combine this with data collected by historians on depopulation outcomes of during the 1948 war. 3/4
These findings provide a novel examination of the form of forced displacement during war, along with one of the first village-level analyses of how Palestinian social cohesion and disunity affected war outcomes. Enjoy! #palestine #israel 4/4
