Job losses much worse in blue states than red states.

Northern battleground states lost more jobs than Sunbelt battlegrounds.

(New BLS state data for Sept, out this morning.)

1/
Among battleground states, job losses steepest in:

MI -10.1%
NV -9.1%
PA -8.4%

Smallest losses in:

GA -4.1%
AZ -4.2%
IA -5.2%

Cumulative change, Feb-Sept 2020.

2/
Same pattern with unemployment rates, which have increased twice as much in blue states as in red states.

3/
Why these blue/red differences? Mostly, industry mix.

Unlike previous recessions, this downturn is about services more than goods. Services account for more of the economy in blue states than in red states.
