As Science Minister, researchers tell me about the pressure to publish in particular places.
This wrongly suggests that where you publish something is more important than what you say.
And could lead to questionable research practices and a growing crisis in research.

We’ve created this situation, partly because of how we evaluate success.
These are not new problems, but the good news is that the UK is leading the way in tackling them.
We've made progress, but it's clear we have to go much further.

There are now very few parts of academic life in the UK that are not affected in some way by the REF.
I have absolutely no intention of disrupting the important work of the current REF - this vital work must continue as planned.

But we must ask how the REF can evolve for the better, so universities and funders work together to build the research culture we all aspire to.
I realise that this will take time. We need to consult widely and think carefully about the consequences of our actions.

Our R&D Roadmap is about setting us out on a journey – a journey which we’ve only just begun.
I am looking forward to working with the whole research community to help make the changes we need, to strengthen our position as a science superpower.
