It’s a very common misconception that autistic people lack a sense of humor.

While we can have trouble understanding sarcasm sometimes, more often than not, we’re very keen on making jokes ourselves.

Those of us who are nonspeaking find ways to joke around, too.
Autistic people’s sense of humor is often unconventional, but that doesn’t make it wrong or unnatural.

You may need to clarify figures of speech when you’re with us, or explain that something you said was a joke.

But often, we’ll understand immediately. It just depends.
We may also find things hilarious even when nobody else does.

Certain phrases, circumstances, or details about a situation might be extremely comical to us in a way that doesn’t make sense to neurotypical people.

It doesn’t mean we’re laughing about nothing.
When I say that autistic people’s sense of humor is unconventional, I also mean that our jokes are often highly creative and original.

We may phrase things in ridiculously formal language for added comedic effect, come up with our own metaphors & similes, or be absurdly blunt.
One word I’d use to describe the humor of most of my autistic friends is wry.

It’s often dry, ironic, and clever. But it can also be completely absurd and simple.

In order to appreciate an autistic person’s sense of humor, you have to keep your mind open to the possibilities.
Sometimes, autistic people are funny without meaning to be.

This is often the result of our blunt, straightforward affect.

As I’ve gotten older I’ve started laughing at myself in these situations, because I find what I said just as funny as everyone else does.
My friends in the past and present have commented that I’m very funny.

Apparently I have good comedic timing, and I’ll often say things at the right moment.

Often, this is unintentional on my part. I just like making observations, and my thoughts are entertaining.
I also really enjoy making jokes about autism.

Not self-deprecating, just self-reflexive. It’s fun to comment on the ways it affects me in daily life

Autism is just very amusing. What could be funnier than a condition that causes me to constantly misunderstand things?
When I went to a summer camp for autistic people a few years ago, the jokes about autism (and other things) were nearly constant. We were always laughing at something.

So please don’t believe for a moment that autistic people lack a sense of humor.

We’re hilarious.
