One of the most annoying aspects of this scandal is the amount of 20/20 hindsight needed from people who had no reason to think twice about it. For example, let’s go back in time to September 2017. News breaks that Red Sox and Yankees were cheating by electronically sign stealing
No one cared. Literally no one. A few articles were written. Drombroski and Cashman faced no real punishment. A memo goes out to remind teams about the rule that already existed and that everyone knew existed. Flash forward a few years. Now electronic sign stealing is being
Treated like it’s a federal crime. People are arguing that a GM should be fired for his employees setting up a system. When the Cardinals scouting director hacked into the Astros system to get an advantage arguably more substantial to long term effects, no one blamed the GM.
Let’s say that again, when an employee actually broke the LAW (not a company rule) and was sentenced to years in Federal Pen...no one said “well gee the GM should have known that was happening and he should be fired. How could he not know that was happening?”
When the Sox and Yanks did it, no one said they should be fired. Drombroski did it twice and faced no ire. The commissioner going so far as to say “he didn’t know. It was rogue employees” and yet it was Luhnow’s responsibility?
We hate the cheating scandal, but the reaction to it as been downright silly.
