Anyone else like to think about machines with their own motor or other power system as having some sort of "soul?"
Like, a hand tool is just a tool. But a car, a washer, a vacuum, are different
You can take an S2000 and put in racing seats, new bushings, new ECU tune, remove the soft top, it's essentially the same car. But an LS swap? New soul. Different car.
The machine soul, to me, is not necessarily literally life. But it's not just a metaphor either. I relate to these machines as if they truly are alive, at least as much as a tree is
Oh, and computers!
