⚽️🍟

A thread of the best chips, lobs and scoops in football history.

Let’s not get hung up on what counts and what doesn’t, just some cool goals that go over the keepers’ heads.

Please nominate your favourites if you think they might be missed.
First up, Philippe Albert puts the gloss on Newcastle’s 5-0 win over Man Utd on this day in 1996.

Peter Schmeichel getting chipped? Probably the last time we’ll see that in this thread.
The best chips are after a barnstorming run, everyone expecting a thumping finish only to be surprised by the more subtle approach.

It takes a special player to pull this off; Francesco Totti was a special player.
This is just ridiculous. Who even thinks to chip the keeper from this sort of angle? Glenn Hoddle, that’s who.

Steve Sherwood is the Watford keeper who’s about two inches off his line and is punished for it.
Eric Cantona on the break against Sheffield United in a windy FA Cup third round tie. Lovely finish.
Some decent players on this thread so far. Here’s Raúl for Schalke in 2011.

Of course he could easily have just slid it past the keeper, but where’s the fun in that?
Dennis Bergkamp scored all sorts of great goals, of course there’s a brilliant chip in his highlights package.

This is against RKC in 1992, delightful connection on this.
Two Dennis Bergkamp goals in a row? Sure, why not?

He’s falling over but still manages to chip the Leverkusen keeper. Remarkable.
Given @rafvdvaart posted this about half an hour ago, seems only fair to include this goal on the thread. Impudent.
Of course Karel Poborsky at Euro 96.

Hands up if you also tried to replicate this a hundred times immediately after seeing it.
Goran Pandev scores a brilliant chip against Verona a couple of years ago.

The trajectory on this one is amazing, it looks like it’s going over until so late. The defence deserve it though, they practically invite him to do this.
Ronald Koeman makes the Trabzonspor defence look like total mugs before chipping the keeper on the half-volley.

What a goal.
Oh, it’s Peter Schmeichel again, wasn’t expecting that.

Great goal by Matt Le Tissier. Glad we can separate the art from the artist 😬
What, again? You’re making a bit of a habit of this, Peter.

One thing to note about this Davor Šuker goal was that it was blatantly offside. Way off!

This goal came exactly a week before the Poborsky scoop. What a time to be alive.
What, that wasn’t even Davor Šuker’s best chip? Nope.

This was for Sevilla vs. Botev Plovdiv in the UEFA Cup in 1995.

Sublime.
The connection on this is so, so good. If that were allowed to bounce, the backspin would take it right back to where it started. Shame the net got in the way really.
Three minutes into this Europa League second leg, Fulham had gone 4-1 down on aggregate to Juventus. Then the comeback began.

Clint Dempsey’s glorious chip in the 82nd minute made it 5-4 on aggregate and put Fulham into the QF. Amazing.
Not many of these goals are on the run. And most of them are by great goalscorers.

This, from Ramires, bucked both those trends (no offence Ramires, you know what I mean). What a goal.
The wonderful @IanWright0 with a wonderful goal against Leeds.
And then have Wrighty’s mate David Rocastle chipping... oh god it’s Schmeichel again.

This one should probably have gone down as an own-goal. Probably best for Schmeichel’s legacy that it didn’t.
A chip in a Manchester United match in the 1990s? Uhoh. Wait, it’s ok Peter, this one’s at the other end.

Eric Cantona with an absolutely beautiful goal and the iconic celebration to go with it.
Gianluigi Buffon: pretty good keeper.

Francesco Totti: pretty good at chips

Totti wins this round.
No idea how Jeremain Lens digs this one out, just enough of an arc to take it over the keeper. Great goal.

Cheers to @WeAreWearside for the nomination.
Mark Hughes loved a volley, but they were normally delivered with much more power than this delicate lob over Bruce Grobbelaar.

Have a bonus second goal and a typically dour interview at the end of this clip.

[Nominated by @brownmc]
Not the best video, but a brilliant goal. Peter Beardsley with the tackle and chip. To have the wherewithal to even think of the chip in that scenario is unbelievable.

[Nominated by @Green_Windmill]
Wayne Rooney back in 2007 with this delightful chip over Portsmouth’s David James in the FA Cup. No-one would have been expecting the chip from Rooney, great stuff.
A goal so good it was nominated for the Puskas award: David Ball for Fleetwood in 2015.

Sound up for this one, the crack off the post is just brilliant.

[Nominated by @niallw92]
Such a good goal by Angel Di María, absolutely gorgeous.

It’s a shame that his time at Man Utd didn’t work out, as he started brilliantly. This was only his third Premier League appearance. https://amp.twimg.com/v/2c8ba847-4dae-4377-9a82-f38eb3ff1309
Still going strong in Serie A at 37, here’s Fabio Quagliarella with one of the best consolation goals you’ll ever see, as Italy lost to Slovakia and went out of the 2010 World Cup at the group stage.
Hey, Diego Maradona was quite good wasn’t he? Here he is scoring a typically excellent goal on the way to a 4-2 win over Crvena Zvezda in the 1982/83 Cup Winners’ Cup.
Hey, Lionel Messi is quite good isn’t he? This is from the 2007 Copa America against Mexico. He has about 20 goals that could easily go into this thread but this one will do nicely.
Daniel Sturridge against West Brom, another of those chips where the body shape is disguised so well that no-one sees it coming.

[Nominated by @TomNJones]
Back in 1989: John Barnes goes to The Den and scores this goal as Liverpool beat Millwall on the way to the title. What a beauty.
Giovani Dos Santos surpasses everyone else in the thread by lobbing not just the keeper, but five defenders including one on the line.
The best thing about this video of this Robert Pires goal is Andy Gray applauding in the background.

The second best thing is that it’s Peter Schmeichel. Again. Hi @QuicklyKevin @_Michael_Marden.

The third best thing is that it’s a lovely goal.
Ok, one more. Think this is the last one over this particular keeper.

The second best goal @graemelesaux14 ever scored was this brilliant chip in a 5-3 FA Cup defeat. Up there with the best consolation goals, this.
Johan Cruyff for Ajax v Haarlem in 1981. There are some brilliant footballers on this thread. You need a chip on your CV to really have made it, clearly.
Messi, Totti, Bergkamp, Cantona, Maradona, Barnes, Rooney, Cruyff and... John O’Shea.

What a goal from the unlikeliest of sources.
Brazil v Scotland at the 1982 World Cup. Zico had already scored a brilliant free-kick (there’s another thread for that) in reply to David Narey’s surprise opener, but this Eder goal was excellent too as Brazil eventually won 4-1.
Lovely goal this. Lars Bohinen, the most 90s player imaginable.
Alan Shearer! Didn’t expect to pick one of his goals for this thread.

Lovely subtlety from a player who wasn’t exactly known for the softer touches.
Dalian Atkinson here, scoring the best goal of the first ever Premier League season. Bouncing before the line makes it slightly less aesthetically pleasing but at least it’s a bit different.

Look out for the ☂️ at the end.
This is Erik Huseklepp for Brann against Stabæk in 2009. What a beauty.

Thanks to @tapermo for this one.
Abdulaziz Al Dawsari for Al Hilal against Al Ittihad in the AFC Champions League in 2011.

Great feet, lovely skill, brilliant chip.
Sorry, posted entirely the wrong Carlos Vela goal there!

This is the one, further out than most of his dinks and somehow not even in the League Cup.
Three nominations for this one now so in it goes.

@therealstevenpi scores a wonderfully impudent dink past Manuel Almunia.
It’s so impressive for @vancole9 to score this one - you need to strike it perfectly to chip the keeper from inside the box without it going over. Nice kiss off the bar too.

[Nominated by @matty_knowles]
Chris Sutton lays it off. Henrik Larsson takes it on, nutmegs Bert Konterman and chips it over Stefan Klos. Glorious.

This goal was the 4th in Celtic’s 6-2 victory over Rangers in August 2000.

[Nominated by @niallbache]
This is sensational - Quincy Amarikwa for San Jose Earthquakes in 2016. This is probably the best chip I’d never seen before starting this thread.

@QuincyAmarikwa
A rabona chip? Sure, why not?

Jonathan Calleri for Boca messes up the original chance but makes up for it in some style.

Calleri’s currently on his fourth La Liga loan in as many years. All with different teams. Silly.
George Best was quite good at football. Here is an example of him being quite good, with a brilliantly judged lob over the entire Spurs defence back in 1971.

[Nominated by @GreggBoyleWhooo]
Lazio 1-5 Roma, 2001/02

Vincenzo Montella may have scored four of the goals, but Francesco Totti’s chip was the cherry on top.

Just imagine scoring a goal like this for your boyhood club against your closest rivals to seal an absolute hammering.
Here’s another you might not have seen before.

Jorge “Mágico” Gonzalez is worth reading up about if you have a bit of time. The Salvadoran spent most of his career in Europe at Cadiz and that’s where he scored this brilliant goal. And plenty of others.
Miralem Pjanić, take a bow. Incredible chip from long range.
Dimitar Berbatov doing the least possible work to score a goal and doing so in the coolest, most nonchalant way possible. Very nice.
Thought this thread was done last night but keep finding more.

This was Radamel Falcao against Man City in 2017. Most chips or dinks in the box need the keeper to have gone down - not here. He somehow gets it up and down from 10 yards out. Amazing.
On the run, on the half-volley, clipped over the keeper. Fantastic execution of a really difficult shot from David Beckham.

Not one of his you see that often, but it’s right up there with his best goals.
