Aditya Karikalan or Karikala Chozhan was a better warrior than Arul Mozhi Varman ( Raja Raja Chozhan) but lived a very short life. Here is a short thread on his most famous battle against the Pandyas .

Pandiyas and Chozhas were sworn enemies and were constantly at war and most of the times it was the Chozhas who were victorious.

At the place called Chevur the Pandiya army of 1,50,000 marched against the Chozha confederacy of Thirukovilur malaiman Periyapazhavetarayar Chinnapazhaveterayar Gandaraditta Chozhan kodumbalur Velan and Yuvaraja Karikalan and his younger brother Raja Raja Chozhan.

The Chozha army was only 80,000 strong that day. And the war had begun initially it was an onslaught on the Chozha when they lost 20,000 by noon and the opponent had still a large part of their army remaining. Karikalan Vowed to return with the head of Veerapandian by end of day.

Just when everybody thought all was lost an enraged Karikalan fell upon the Pandiya army taking down the entire left flank of the opponent with 1000 men and inflicting a damage to them which reduced their army to 1,00,000.

Inspired by this the entire Chozha army fell upon the Pandiya army and by evening they inflicted a crushing defeat on the Pandiya army reducing the total strength to a bare minimum of 20,000 soldiers and Veerapandian tried to escape.

An enraged Karikalan followed him till the banks of Vaigai river where the Pandiya monarch was hiding he went in and killed the monarch and returned with the head of the slain monarch to show the symbol of victory and fulfill his vow.

It earned him the title Virapandiyan Thalai Konda Koparakesari Varman Karikalan.
This war nearly subdued the power of Pandiyas till quite sometime.
