liberal individualism has plagued all factions of society, where even in discussions about mental health & addiction, the societal response is either carceral or liberalized notions of “self-help”/“self-care”—as opposed to understanding them as consequence of structural violence

i think often about things like ‘aa’—and just how largely ineffective and unsustainable it is under the constraints of capital(ism); when we are utterly refusing & unable to address these societal ills and consequences at their roots

we’re practically wielding gentleman’s ‘bootstraps’ narratives w/o providing any adequate solutions to—or even addressing—why addiction, or other mental illnesses, are such a widespread structural issues to begin with. it’s incredibly grossssss, lol

imagine a world where we’re centering the evils of capital(ism), patriarchal violence (sexual/domestic/gendered violence), and white supremacy, as more often than not the root causes of consequential widespread mental illnesses—instead of individualizing structural issues
