Academics, let’s be honest: it’s rare to see a conference speaker completely captivate the audience with their knowledge and energy but it’s wonderful when it happens. Kylie Moore-Gilbert did this, and that is how I met her. Thread.
/Kylie presented her PhD research on opposition groups in Bahrain at a conference at Deakin University in 2016. A minute or two in and it was clear to me that she was at home in the classroom and was a natural scholar.
/Her presentation seemed to flow effortlessly - always a sure sign of *hard* work. Her research design, language skills, empathy with her participants, and contextual knowledge were all superb.
/Like others, I clambered to introduce myself after her to talk to tell her how impressed I was, eager to learn more. She was modest about her work, and perhaps a little surprised by the attention.
/For an early career academic Kylie has already published a considerable amount of her research. It’s great. I assign it to my students who in turn reference it in their essays. She continues to educate people even though her detention means that she can’t do it in person.
